Passion and forbidden love unfolds as the feelings of racing hearts, reckless impulses and inner turmoil reflect the magnitude of Prokofiev’s dramatic score in this famous story. Piercing elation and lament of young love reflect through blue and gold light as dancer’s swimming hands, flying arms and off-kilter balances are brought into relief with ballet’s spare and elegant design. Though Jean-Christophe Maillot’s dance is firmly rooted in classical ballet, his choreography is imbued with natural and intuitive movement of progressive and expanding margins of expression. Peter Boal was so mesmerized by Maillot’s Romeo et Juliette when he attended its New York debut, it became his first full-length acquisition as the artistic director for PNB. www.pnb.org or call 206.441.2424.
