Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra: Brubeck & Desmond – Inseparable
Kirkland Performance Center
Composer/pianist Dave Brubeck and alto saxophonist Paul Desmond made for an inseparable pair that took the jazz world by storm with a special blend of sophisticated swing and a cool attitude. Their inventive writing and virtuosic playing appealed to the new “intellectual listener” of 1950s jazz as never before.
“Take Five” has been the single top selling jazz hit of all time, and is just one of the many Brubeck/Desmond chart-toppers you will hear in this concert, including “Blue Rondo a la Turk,” “The Duke” and “In Your Own Sweet Way.”
The award-winning, 17-piece Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra (SRJO) is the Northwest’s premier big band jazz ensemble, co-directed by drummer Clarence Acox, nationally recognized director of bands at Seattle’s Garfield High School, and saxophonist/arranger Michael Brockman, long-time faculty member at the University of Washington School of Music.
