James Minchin III/Decca Classics GroupA new Boz Scaggs studio effort titled Memphis is set to hit stores on March 5. The 13-track collection will mark the soulful singer's first album of new recordings since 2008's Speak Low. In a new Rolling Stone interview, Scaggs reveals that he recorded all of the tunes for Memphis in an impressive three short days.
"It's one of the easiest projects I've ever had," he admits. "I sang songs that feel entirely comfortable to me. [They] just sort of fell out easily in the nicest way."
Scaggs collaborated on the album with renowned producer and session drummer Steve Jordan at Memphis' Royal Studios, where the late Willie Mitchell produced Al Green's classic 1970s hits. Boz says of working in the famed facility, "The sound that comes into that room and the music that came out of the Willie Mitchell reign down there is one of the basic soundtracks of my life. The aura is so tangible around that studio."
Among the songs featured on Memphis are covers of the traditional tune "Corinna Corinna," the 1970 Brook Benton hit "Rainy Night in Georgia" and a 1977 Willy DeVille composition "Mixed Up Shook Up Girl," which will serve as the album's lead single. The latter track currently is streaming at RollingStone.com.
Scaggs tells Rolling Stone that when it comes to picking cover tunes for a project, "I just start going through and seeing which ones I can really make my voice fit into or the ones that I can find that I think I can give a fresh delivery to."
Boz has scheduled a series of North American tour dates in the spring to promote Memphis. His itinerary currently runs from a March 21 concert in Modesto, California, through an April 24 show in Dallas. He also has lined up a June 16 appearance at the Stern Grove Festival in San Francisco.
