Henry Diltz/Elektra RecordsA special auction will be held February 22 at Bonhams in Los Angeles that will mark the culmination of the year-long display of giant guitar sculptures throughout L.A.'s Sunset Strip. The sale of the 18 art guitars created for the Gibson GuitarTown on the Sunset Strip project will raise money for the Los Angeles Fund for Public Education's Arts Matter initiative, which lends financial support to music and art programs in the area's public schools.
The decorated guitar statues honor various artists and musical genres that have inspired the music of the Sunset Strip over the years. Among the pieces are "Roadhouse Blues," which honors The Doors and is signed by the group's surviving members, John Densmore, Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek. Also offered is"There's Something Happening Here," which pays tribute to The Buffalo Springfield and is autographed by Stephen Stills. Among the other guitar sculptures are ones that have been signed by Donovan and Peter & Gordon's Peter Asher. In addition, the collection includes pieces dedicated to Stevie Nicks, T. Rex, James Brown and Van Halen.
The sculptures will be on public display at the Bonhams auction house from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. PT on February 21 and 22; the sale itself will begin at 8 p.m. PT on the latter day. Visit Bonhams.com to check out all of the guitar statues.
