Courtesy of Carlos SantanaCarlos Santana is among the celebrities who will be honored at the 10th Anniversary Artivist Awards, which will be held October 17 at the famed Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, California. The event recognizes people and organizations for their artistic contributions and their support of issues such as human and animal rights, children's advocacy and environmental preservation. The gala is the only awards program affiliated with the United Nations' Department of Public Information.
Santana will receive a Lifetime Ambassador for the Arts and Advocacy award at the two-hour ceremony, which will be televised live on the TV Guide Network. The guitar legend will be honored, in part, for his pioneering achievements blending rock with Latin music, as well as for helping establish the Milagro Foundation, which provides financial assistance for various community-based charities concerned with the wellbeing of underprivileged children.
Other honorees at this year's Artivist Awards include Cyndi Lauper and Herbie Hancock. Lauper is being acknowledged for her career as a pop hit maker, as well as for her support of AIDS-awareness groups and advocacy for the rights of *** and transgender people. Hancock is being recognized for his accomplishments as a jazz innovator, for his work as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and for encouraging global peace through the International Committee of Artists for Peace, which he co-founded.
Also slated to receive honors at this Artivist ceremony are Lisa Marie Presley, Alicia Keys, Toni Braxton, actors Don Cheadle and Eric Roberts and American Idol creator Nigel Lythgoe. To find out more about the awards, visit Artivist.com.
