Powell led Motown's Artist Personal Development Department, tutoring artists such as Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, The Supremes and The Jackson Five on how to dress and how to carry themselves on and off the stage.
Motown founder Berry Gordy said Monday in a statement that Powell "brought something to Motown that no other record company had." He added, "She was a star in her own right -- an original."
Powell was honored at an event at the Motown Museum in Detroit in August.
