Photo: Jimmy KingDavid Bowie is offering his fans a special treat for Halloween. The singer has just posted a video for a portion of "Love Is Lost (***** Steve Reich Mix by James Murphy for the DFA)," a new remix that will be available on the deluxe reissue of his latest album, The Next Day. The most interesting thing about the clip, though, is probably the fact that it cost just $12.99 to make.
Turns out Bowie took a do-it-yourself approach to the video, which was recorded in a darkened corridor of his office in Manhattan. It features footage of Bowie projected onto a puppet as he sings along to the track. It also includes scenes of the 66-yar-old rocker washing his hands and manipulating a lifelike puppet of himself. Costs were kept down by the fact that Bowie wrote and edited the clip himself; the puppets came from his personal archive, his assistant Jimmy King manned the camera, and his best friend Coco Schwab oversaw all the other details. The only thing they spent money on was the flash drive to which they downloaded the finished video.
The expanded version of The Next Day, titled The Next Day Extra, will arrive in stores on Tuesday. In addition to the remix, the three-disc box set includes the original 14-track album released this past March; a companion CD boasting 10 additional tunes, including five unreleased songs and two remixes; and a DVD containing four promotional videos.
