The 2013 edition of the Kennedy Center Honors gala, which was attended by President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama, was taped earlier this month in Washington, D.C.
Joel and Santana were joined by jazz great Herbie Hancock, actress Shirley MacLaine and opera singer Martina Arroyo as the 2013 recipients of the Kennedy Center Honors. The prestigious prizes are presented annually by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in recognition of the recipients' lifetime contributions to American culture through the performing arts.
At the December 8 event, Tony Bennett shared kind words about Joel before The Eagles' Don Henley, country superstar Garth Brooks, Panic! at the Disco frontman Brendon Urie and Canadian singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright performed some of the Piano Man's most well-known songs.
Harry Belafonte delivered a speech paying homage to Santana, while Buddy Guy, Steve Winwood, Rage Against the Machine's Tom Morello, Sheila E. and Colombian rock act Juanes performed the guitar legend's music.
