MotownTheMusical.comThink your kid can play a convincing Michael Jackson? Berry Gordy has kicked off a nationwide search for an African-American performer, aged 8-11, who can take on the roles of pre-teen Michael, Stevie Wonder and Berry himself in the upcoming Broadway production Motown: The Musical.
A just-launched audition website invites hopefuls to perform "I Want You Back," "I'll Be There" or "Who's Loving You," then send a YouTube link to their performance. Berry says in a video clip that he's not looking for "imitators," but people who are "smart and can be themselves in the role." The Motown founder adds, "He has to be extremely talented, plus he has to give me the same chills that I got when I saw Michael Jackson in the first place."
Written by Gordy, Motown: The Musical will trace the rise of the storied musical empire. The show is set to open in spring 2013 at the Nederlander Theatre in New York City.
