Courtesy of 2007 TJL Ventures, LLCA new PBS concert special paying tribute to the classic vocal groups of the 1950s and early '60s will premiere this Saturday or Sunday, depending on your location. Doo *** Love Songs is part of the network's ongoing My Music series, and will be headlined by Little Anthony & the Imperials.
The program also will feature performances by The Tokens, members of Frankie Lymon's Teenagers, The Mystics and Johnny Maestro, as well as a reunion of The Drifters' original lineup -- Bill Pinkney, Ben E. King, Charlie Thomas and Bobby Hendricks. Sadly, Maestro and Pinckney have both passed away since the taping of the show (in 2010 and 2007, respectively).
In conjunction with the premiere of Doo *** Love Songs, a new seven-CD compilation boasting more than 130 tunes has been released. Among the many memorable hits featured on the set are The Ronettes' "Be My Baby," Ruby & the Romantics' "Our Day Will Come," The Penguins' "Earth Angel," Dion's "Donna the Prima Donna" and The Del Vikings' "Come Go With Me."
