Don McLean's "American Troubadour" Documentary Arriving on DVD Next Month

Time LifeA new documentary about the life and career of "American Pie" singer/songwriter Don McLean will be released on DVD on September 11.  Don McLean: American Troubadour, which originally premiered on PBS earlier this year, features new conversations with the acclaimed folk-rock artist, as well as footage of performances of some of his best-known compositions including "Vincent," "And I Love So," "Castles in the Air" and, of course, "American Pie."

The video also boasts interviews with The Beach Boys' Brian Wilson and R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills, clips of some of McLean's high-profile TV appearances and commentary from lauded author and Rolling Stone journalist Douglas Brinkley.  The film was produced and directed by multiple Emmy winner Jim Brown, whose résumé also includes The Weavers: Wasn't That a Time and Pete Seeger: The Power of Song.

"I let Jim Brown into my life because I respect him and trust him, says McLean.  "We've known each other for 40 years and he allowed my ideas to be fully realized while telling my story accurately and poetically."

On the same day that the American Troubadour DVD is released, a companion two-CD best-of compilation of the same name also will hit stores.  McLean will be lining up some television appearances to promote the DVD and album, and he also has several U.S. concerts scheduled this month and in September.  Visit Don-McLean.com to check out his full itinerary.
