New Jackson 5 Compilation Offers Dozens of Early Rarities

Universal Music EnterprisesHad he lived, Michael Jackson would have turned 54 on Wednesday, August 29, and in honor of the late King of Pop's birthday, a new compilation of rare, early recordings by The Jackson 5 was released this week as a digital download.

The 32-track album, Come and Get It: The Rare Pearls, features recently unearthed and previously unreleased tunes by Michael and his brothers. The collection will be issued as a deluxe two-CD box set on September 18.

Come and Get It is highlighted by a variety of interesting tracks, including cover versions of some well-known hits for other artists. Among these are "Mama Told Me Not to Come" which was a hit for Three Dog Night, "Up on the Roof" which was made famous by The Drifters, "You Can't Hurry Love" which was a hit for The Supremes, "Feelin' Alright" which was originally recorded by Traffic and "Since I Lost My Baby," originally by The Temptations.

The album also offers a few bonus tracks, including a demo version of the Jackson 5 hit "Mama's Pearl" that originally was titled "Guess Who's Making *******."

The box set will feature special packaging containing individual sleeves for the CDs; a booklet offering in-depth information about the songs, photos and an essay by producer Deke Richards; and a 7-inch vinyl disc boasting two of the tunes on Come and Get It.

In a statement, Richards compares his experience of listening to the rare Jackson 5 material again to "discovering King Solomon's Mines...There were sapphires, diamonds, rubies, and then there were those gorgeous pearls, those unmistakable 'rare pearls.' They sound as good today as they did when they were recorded 40 years ago."
