Reprise RecordsFans of Steely Dan's Donald Fagen can get a taste of the singer/pianist's new solo album, Sunken Condos, now at RollingStone.com. The website currently is streaming the collection's first single, "I'm Not the Same Without You," which was released as a digital single a few days ago.
The tune boasts an upbeat melody set to a funky jazz groove not surprisingly reminiscent of classic Steely Dan. As for the theme of the song, it's sung from the perspective of a guy who finds himself changing in some surprising ways after being dumped by a significant other.
Fagen tells Rolling Stone that he intended the song to be "a gloss on those anthemic tunes in which the singer tells a story about how she's going to make it through a recent breakup and bravely carry on." He cites Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" and Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'" as examples of this type of tune. He adds, "In 'I'm Not the Same Without You,' the narrator not only survives but rapidly evolves into something a bit more than human -- at least in his own mind."
Sunken Condos will be released on October 16.
