Rebecca Taylor/MSGEarlier this year, Elton John was convinced his upcoming album The Diving Board -- his first solo project since 2006 -- was finished. But when the album's release was pushed back, he took a hard look at the project...and decided to go back to the drawing board.
The Diving Board was originally supposed to come out this year, but its release has been delayed to 2013. When that happened, T Bone Burnett, Elton's producer, tells Rolling Stone that the Rocket Man had second thoughts. "This is the first time that Elton's had time to live with something before it's come out," Burnett says, adding that Elton felt that some of the songs on the disc didn't quite fit with its overall theme.
"There were like seven or eight songs that were so completely of a piece that they have an identity. I think he thought, 'You know, maybe I should write some more things in that **** so that the album has a tighter identity,'" explains Burnett. "Some tunes were maybe too happy for the overall identity of the album."
Back in March, Elton told Rolling Stone that The Diving Board is "the most exciting solo record I've done in a long, long time." So far, there's no set release date for the project.
