RCA/Legacy RecordingsA newly revamped two-CD retrospective gathering together many of the best-loved songs by the Jefferson Airplane and its spinoff groups the Jefferson Starship and Starship arrives in stores on Tuesday.  The compilation, which originally was released under the title Hits in 2002, has been repackaged for reissue as part of Legacy Recordings' Essential series.  The Essential Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship/Starship serves up 35 tracks split between the three bands.

The double album charts the interesting musical journey of the San Francisco-based groups, starting with the psychedelic explorations and protest anthems of the Jefferson Airplane, through the more accessible rock of the Jefferson Starship and on to the pop-oriented chart smashes of Starship.  Among the classic hits featured on the discs are the Airplane's "Somebody to Love," "White Rabbit" and "Volunteers, The Jefferson Starship's "Miracles," "***** on Me" and "Find Your Way Back," and Starship's "We Built This City," "Sara" and "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now."

Meanwhile, a deluxe reissue of the Jefferson Starship's 1979 album, Freedom at Point Zero, also will be released on Tuesday, according to Amazon.  The package includes updated artwork and a booklet featuring a new interview and a 4,000-word essay.  Freedom at Point Zero features the top 20 hit "Jane," and marked the arrival of powerful singer Mickey Thomas, who would go on to lead the group when it transformed into Starship.
