Pledge MusicRingo Starr and Joe Walsh are among the well-known musicians who have contributed previously unreleased songs to an upcoming compilation that will raise money to rebuild lower-income communities in the New York area that were hit hard by Hurricane Sandy. Songs After Sandy: Friends of Red Hook For Hurricane Sandy Relief, Volume 1, which is available for pre-order now exclusively at PledgeMusic.com, was organized by Green Ground Zero, an non-profit organization that is seeking to restore the damaged areas while creating environmentally sustainable housing.
Among the tracks featured on the CD are a version of Starr's "Wings," which he recorded at a concert this past summer with his All Starr Band; a live rendition of Walsh's "Rocky Mountain Way" that features Ringo on drums; a new electric version of Jeff Lynne's "Save Me Now"; and a tune by Animals singer Eric Burdon titled "Tishmongo Blues." The disc also includes a bonus video of Grateful Dead singer/guitarist Bob Weir and roots rocker Jesse Malin performing the song "Brown-Eyed Women."
All proceeds raised from sales of Songs After Sandy will go toward a number of charities affiliated with Green Ground Zero, including Restore Red Hook, Red Hook Initiative and Occupy Sandy. You can preview the tracks from the album online here.
In addition, several artists are selling collectible items and special concert packages to benefit the cause. Among them is a poem handwritten and autographed by Edgar Winter, and a pair of tickets to two upcoming shows by Roger Hodgson that also includes a meet-and-greet with the ex-Supertramp singer. Meanwhile, a drumhead signed and played by Starr already has sold for $2,000.
