The Band/Robbie Robertson documentary 'Once Were Brothers' gets released on DVD and Blu-ray today

Magnolia Home EntertainmentOnce Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson and The Band, the 2019 documentary inspired by Robbie Robertson‘s 2016 memoir Testimony, gets its release on DVD, Blu-ray and digital HD today.

The film focuses on new interviews with The Band‘s founding guitarist and main songwriter, who shares recollections about memorable events and incidents spanning from his childhood through his years with the influential Americana group.

Speaking recently with ABC Audio, Robertson describes his experience with The Band’s other musicians as “an incredible journey,” which began when Robbie was a teenager playing Toronto clubs as singer Ronnie Hawkins‘ backing group, The Hawks, and ended after The Band’s historic farewell concert “The Last Waltz.”

Robertson says when the documentary was being put together, he didn’t have a lot to do with it because was busy with various other projects. He tells ABC Audio that when he did get to see how the movie was progressing, he was impressed by the job that the movie’s then-24-year-old director, Daniel Roher, and his team were doing.

“When I came into it, I was really surprised on how emotional this film was,” he explains. “‘Cause…to be honest with you, I don’t like many music documentary things that they do…So when I saw it, I thought, ‘Whoa, this is really quite moving, and they’re doing a great job.’ And you could feel the intensity of the work being put into it.”

Robertson adds, “The brotherhood in The Band is so strong in this film, and the way the filmmakers portrayed the honesty of that…I just didn’t know that it could be that moving.” (AUDIO IS ABC 1-ON-1)
