A previously unreleased Marvin Gaye album titled You’re the Man, featuring tracks that the Motown legend recorded in 1972, will hit stores on March 29 — three days before what would’ve been the late singer’s 80th birthday.
The 17-track collection, including every solo and non-soundtrack recording Gaye made in 1972, will be available as a two-LP set and digitally. Fifteen of the tracks have never before been issued on vinyl.
You’re the Man was recorded in Detroit and Los Angeles at a time that Gaye had decided to withdraw from the music business, following the huge critical and commercial of 1971’s Let’s Get It On album.
The title track, which finds Gaye criticizing the inaction of U.S. politicians, was initially released as a single, but when it didn’t become a crossover pop hit, Marvin decided to shelve the entire album project.
Among the other tunes featured on You’re the Man are four songs produced by Willie Hutch, co-writer of the Jackson 5 hit “I’ll Be There”; and two others produced by Freddie Perren and Fonce Mizell, members of the Jackson 5’s hit-making team The Corporation.
The album also includes the holiday ballad “I Want to Come Home for Christmas,” which boasts an anti-Vietnam War theme in the vein of “What’s Going On.”
Three tracks are newly mixed by Salaam Remi, a songwriter and producer who’s worked with Nas, The Fugees and Amy Winehouse. Remi’s mix of the song “My Last Chance” is available now as a digital download and via streaming services. If you pre-order the album will receive a free download of the track.
